Blood doping is actually several things. All are intended to increase the oxygen carrying capacity of the blood. This gives endurance athletes an edge.
- Injections of erythropoietin (EPO) a naturally occurring substance.
- Injections of synthetic chemicals that carry oxygen.
- Blood transfusions, often of the athletes own blood that were stored and transfused back into the athlete to boost his/her blood.
This would mean potential ban across all sports, World Cups and Olympics.
Russia's anti-doping agency (RUSADA) could be in danger of being declared non-compliant by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), after the agency opened compliance proceedings just months after a suspension against RUSADA was lifted.
